Star Wars Outlaws is a third-person action-adventure game where players take on the role of Kay Vess, a cunning scoundrel navigating expansive open worlds across various planets and space. Players engage in a mix of melee combat and blaster firefights, with the blaster offering multiple firing modes, including an EMP pulse. The environment plays a crucial role in combat, as Kay can use objects like explosive barrels to her advantage. She also possesses an Adrenaline ability that, once charged, slows time and enables her to unleash a rapid series of shots at targeted enemies. Stealth tactics are another option, allowing Kay to slip past or silently neutralize foes.

Kay’s toolkit includes a grappling hook and an electronic hacking device. Nix, her loyal companion, aids by scanning the environment, interacting with objects, and distracting or attacking enemies. Players can ride a speeder bike across planetary landscapes and pilot a starship called the Trailblazer to travel between planets. Space exploration extends to orbital regions, with space combat featuring laser cannons and missiles. Space stations serve as trade hubs and offer additional missions.

As players progress, they earn credits from completing activities, which can be spent on customizing gear and upgrading Kay, Nix, and their equipment, including the blaster, speeder, and Trailblazer. New abilities and upgrades can be unlocked by completing assignments for experts found throughout the game.
