Liam Payne, a former member of boyband One Direction, has died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, according to police there. He was 31.

Payne’s death occurred at a hotel on Costa Rica Street in the Palermo neighborhood, according to a statement from police provided to CNN.

The musician was best known as a member of the famed British boyband One Direction. The band, which also included Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, first formed in 2010 after each member appeared on the UK version of reality competition show “The X Factor.”

One Direction announced they were taking a hiatus in 2015. Payne later released his debut solo album in 2019 titled “LP1.” In March, Payne released his LP “Teardrops.”

Payne had a son, born in 2017, who he shared with former Girls Aloud singing group member Cheryl Cole.

Liam Payne, former One Direction member, has died at 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. The incident took place at the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighborhood on Wednesday. Authorities reported that Payne fell from the third floor, suffering fatal injuries. Paramedics confirmed his death on the scene.

Pablo Policicchio, a spokesperson for Buenos Aires' Security Ministry, stated that Payne “threw himself from the balcony.” Police responded to a call about an “aggressive man” possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Upon arrival, officers heard a thud and discovered Payne’s body in the courtyard.

Alberto Crescenti, head of the emergency medical team, shared that an autopsy is being conducted to investigate the circumstances. Argentine media reported Payne was in town to attend a concert by his former bandmate, Niall Horan.

Payne was part of the global phenomenon One Direction, formed in 2010 on The X Factor. Known for hits like “What Makes You Beautiful,” the band dominated the charts before splitting in 2016. Fans, famously called "Directioners," have since remained loyal.

Payne leaves behind his son, Bear, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend Cheryl, as well as his parents, Geoff and Karen, and sisters, Ruth and Nicola. Payne’s representatives have not yet responded for comment.
