discuss Do you miss when most movies were 90 minutes long?

I'm feeling very nostalgic today. I remember when most of the movies were around 90 minutes long. In those movies, there are no unnecessary subplots or plots. It was just pure all the way. We witnessed unadulterated storytelling. Modern movies have lost it because we don't feel the magic any more. For instance, The Avengers movies are over 2.5 hours long. That's way too long for a movie.

Movies that were 90 minutes long were the greatest. They played the plotlines out fully without a lot of dead time that isn't necessary, like for example 2 minutes of additional film of just traffic or rain or streetlights, etc., that doesn't add anything to the movie except time.

I find that 90-minute movies now can't compete with 90-minute movies from the 90s. They leave too many plotholes, while movies back then wouldn't have you questioning anything, except for if there might be a #2 release.

You nailed it. For exceptional storytelling, it has to be precise, no beating around the bush. The movies in those days were masterfully crafted. That is why it keeps you invested throughout the film. They always deliver from start to finish.

That's true! When you placed them side by side, the 90s films often had tighter scripts, and the storytelling was more focused, with no time wasting. It's creativity at its peak because there are no special effects back then.

You guys are speaking my language. Look at the classics like Akira (1988). It is 124 minutes and you get to enjoy every bit of it. Also, check out Spirited Away (2001). Both films tell us that we don't need excessive runtime to tell a story.

I think it all depends on what kind of story the movie is exploring. Some movies are boring even when they are 90 minutes or less and some movies are good even when they are 3 hours. More than length, I am more interested in the making and substance.
